Daily Prompt 1/16/24

Bloganuary writing prompt
What colleges have you attended?

Haha, not today Satan.

Listing colleges to me seems dangerous, although it wouldn’t identify where I currently live, it would open up the ability to likely pick out addresses on some kind of verification process. So no, I will not list the actual colleges I have been to, other than the two I am willing to reveal. Instead I will talk about my education in terms of degrees and majors.

I earned a master’s degree online through Air University, which is part of Maxwell AFB in Alabama. It was also a military professional education programs for my rank level at the time. For most of my Air Force career, you needed this education program and A master’s degree. What I did was a free option that provided both. It took me several years, taking a few classes at a time around having kids, deploying, and having a full time job all at the same time. It was a challenge, but I made it!

I also started not one, but TWO master’s degree programs at American Military University, also an online program catered towards military students. I started with sports management, but lost interest and switched to a Public Health major with a certificate in sports management. I finished neither. This was prior to the Air University program. What ultimately messed me up with finishing the Public Health program was that I became an instructor for my career field and had zero time because I was instructing live missions and had tons of other commitments related to my job. It just wasn’t possible for me to do all of it at the same time. Shortly before my time was about to open up, I found out that I was getting promoted and that I would be eligible for this free program through AU. So I went with that.

Prior to that, I attended a large university where I grew up to complete ROTC. I was never formally in a major and simply took a couple of classes that interested me and provided enough credits for me to be considered full time. This was my second error after graduating with my bachelor’s degree. I wasn’t paying for these classes and I could have finished a master’s degree long before my life became impossibly complicated and it would take me three programs to actually finish a master’s degree.

I got my bachelor’s from a very small college that wasn’t too far from where I grew up. I completed my degree in 4 years, loved every minute of it and really wish I had invested more time in learning and taking more classes than I did some semesters. There’s so much more I wish I had been exposed to. College was some of the best years of my life. I only wish I had been more mature and more aware of the opportunities that were in front of me. My first mistake after finishing was not going directly on to graduate school. I guess I really didn’t know what I wanted to do, and so I just started working. Although everything has turned out perfectly since then, I did have some big bumps in the road that i could’ve avoided had I been more diligent about my future.
