I had a meeting with my fellow lacrosse coaches for Girl’s team. I played lacrosse way back in the day and I love coaching her team and the little girls’ team too. I played goalie and now I’ll be working with middle school goalies too. I am really excited about that, actually.
I generally like the other coaches and find them easy to work with, other than sometimes not knowing everything that they are doing because their kids all go to one school district and mine go to another. It’s not a big deal though, other than I have nothing to do with their schools. I don’t know the same people or anyone who can help with some of the problems we have.
But I found out today that we don’t have the same access to the better fields or practice areas. That the league spent $5000 for the boys to practice at a huge church gym while we are stuck in a gym at a preschool that is very small. We have gotten a few chances to practice at the huge gym, but not like the boys’ teams have. We were denied new safety equipment as well, while the boys got new jerseys. There’s nothing wrong with the jerseys they had.
While I do have a problem with the league, my bigger problem is people who seem to think that girls and women should be fighting for the integrity of their sports. Sure, ok. But how can they feel empowered to stand up for ANYTHING when they are taught from the beginning that their sports are inferior to boys’ sports. That their safety needs come second to the boys’ aesthetic needs? It makes absolutely no sense to me. On one hand, the messaging is that girls’ sports don’t matter but on the other there’s a demand to “fight” for something that doesn’t even seem to matter to those same people.
It’s all bullshit. I can’t even pretend that it’s not the most annoying thing. It should be equal. Completely equal.
