First of all, this seems like a super silly question. The most important question about starting a sports team would be where’s the funding coming from and oh, I don’t know, WHAT SPORT it would be! And also, am I joining an established league or is the entire league new and also what level? Like are we talking about a youth sports team or an adult team? All of that matters so much more than the colors and mascot. (I started a master’s degree in sports management that I guess I learned a lot more about than I realized. I eventually switched that degree to public health and didn’t finish that one either, although I thoroughly enjoyed both of them.)
But assuming all of that was answered for me and let’s also assume it’s a youth lacrosse team since that’s all I will be coaching this spring, I would make the colors gray and black and the mascot would be a raccoon. I don’t know why, other than that’s the first thing I thought of. Raccoons can be sweet and cuddly or angry and mean. I like gray and black together anyway, but it seems to be a hot color scheme on my mind lately.
Serious follow up questions would be things like how will I fund equipment and how will I compete with the other leagues around here. For the real youth lacrosse league I coach in, we all wear the colors associated with the school district of the team, although you don’t have to actually go to the district to play on the team. I think this league is a feeder league for the high school team though. I think I am probably overthinking the question as usual but still, I have always cared so much more about sports than the colors and mascots.
