Daily Prompt 7/24/23

Daily writing prompt
What would you change about modern society?

I would change how we interact with each other and focus on face to face interactions, even if only through video conferencing apps. I know a lot of people feel more lonely than ever because we SEEM to be so connected through social media. But we are not all connected as well as we need to be.

I think everyone needs a community to belong to and it doesn’t necessarily matter what that community is, as long as the community isn’t hurting anyone. It could be a work related committee, a social committee, connection through children’s school functions, coaching children’s sports, a senior center group, or a bunch of neighbors who chat regularly. Anywhere connections can be made.

I think that the “modern” invention of social media provides a connection outlet for introverts and should not be blamed as the reason why people aren’t connected to communities anymore. It’s more the mindset that we should be able to handle everything with no help. Social media is dangerous when you are unable to preserve the boundaries between your life and the perfect lives of friends that are curated specifically for social media. Everyone has ups and downs but most people will not want to be open about that with everyone.

I think there’s a lot of great things about modern society, but I think there are some things worth revisiting like disconnecting from our devices periodically, giving ourselves a break from stressful things, and making sure that we are still part of healthy, loving community that brings us joy in the connections we can make within them.
