Daily Prompt 1/15/24

Bloganuary writing prompt
If you could un-invent something, what would it be?

I am not sure why, but wordpress isn’t letting me title this post for some reason. I don’t know if it’s my computer or the website made a change or is having a glitch…

Anyway, if I could un-invent something, it would be the smartphone. Even though I do like my phone for a million reasons, I think the smartphone has introduced a ton of issues that haven’t made out lives better. There are times when I am grateful for my phone and the capabilities I have now. But there are more times when I wish I didn’t have to deal with the phone or the idea that I am always reachable. I don’t like being reachable all the time, or the irritation people feel when I choose to not be reachable. I try to maintain boundaries and not just answer my phone if I don’t feel like it.

  1. I don’t want to be reachable all the time either. Apart from all the other social problems they cause smartphones have stolen our time to be alone with our thoughts.

    1. Totally! Sometimes I just put my phone somewhere for a few hours and leave it where I won’t be near it, especially if I need to get something done and want to focus 100%. I don’t allow sound for alerts because that really distracts me.

      1. If I am at home I don’t want to carry it around all day. We have a landline so why should I ?

  2. i agree! especially with texting, i think the idea of text messaging is really weird. someone at any time, any place, any mental state can send you a message and somehow you’re a bad person if you don’t respond to it?

    1. Exactly! It took a long for me to realize that if I am not in a space where I feel like responding, I don’t have to. I don’t owe anyone an immediate response unless it’s an emergency. But for years I felt like I must respond right away, even if it’s not anything important.
