In the middle of the night last night I woke up with extreme pain in my arm. During the day yesterday it felt a little sore and like I couldn’t straighten it out completely. But it was just a slight problem, an annoyance. But in the middle of the night, the pain was so bad it woke me up. I couldn’t find a position for it that didn’t hurt. I used a heating pad, took Motrin, tried a wedge instead of my pillow, and finally gave up and slept on the couch. For some reason it was easy to get comfortable on the couch and I finally got some sleep.
I’ve taken more Motrin today and used more heat. And my arm is still messed up. I have a huge knot on the back of my shoulder and some of the pain seems to be radiating from my elbow as well. Several arm muscles feel extremely tight and it all just sucks.
But what did I do to hurt it in the first place? Was it just slightly messed up and then I slept on it funny last night when I first went to sleep? Could it be that simple? Or did I do something else to it? I have been trying to be very mindful of my lifting restrictions from surgery so I know I didn’t really overtax it with lifting anything. The only thing I can think of is holding it strangely or sleeping on it weird.
I just wish I knew what I did to it so I don’t do it again tonight, if it is indeed something about sleeping position. I know it won’t hurt forever, but I hate how it feels right now. I don’t like my body not listening to me and hurting when I don’t want it to hurt. It’s been tough enough recovering from surgery, and now that I’m almost all better from that, I don’t want any other issues developing! I might suspect the surgery was to blame if this has happened in the first two weeks, when I was in a good bit of pain. But my doctor didn’t give me any motion restrictions other than if it hurts, don’t do it. So I’ve been moving it pretty normally this entire time. Except today.
I hope it’s better tomorrow. I can’t take another day of limited motion and pain. And Motrin and the heating pad. That’s no fun!
