Would you pay $250,000 to dive down to the Titanic wreckage in a submersible controlled by a gaming controller? Oh and it’s bolted on the outside too.
No? Maybe?
Full disclosure, I love the story of the Titanic. Building it, the sailing, the sinking, the people who lived and died, the disgusting elitism that killed mostly poor people. The men standing off to the side to let the women and children on first. The drama of Bruce Ismay escaping on a lifeboat as Capt Smith, Thomas Andrews, and the higher level officers stayed onboard and went down with the ship. The rescue of the lifeboats and the drunk baker that was pulled from the water and survived. The inquiries afterwards.
But you would never catch me diving to the wreckage even if they paid me for reasons completely unrelated to the danger of the water pressure.
- It’s hallowed ground. People died miserable deaths there. It should be respected and only used by professionals to study various things that the average person doesn’t care about.
- Nature is reclaiming the ship, which is part of what is being researched. We couldn’t make this work as a ship on the surface, so let nature have it. Everything brought up needs extra special care so just let it all go. It’s been over 100 years anyway. No one is “missing” anything that’s been down there all this time.
- There’s so much beautiful footage on video now and so many amazing pictures taken by people who went down there professionally. I can see everything I want to see from these sources without disturbing the wreckage in person.
But what you go if you had the money? Would you take this big risk? If there was a reputable way to do it, would that change your mind? If you could do it for free, would you want to? I’m so curious about what other people think about visiting the wreckage themselves and about what’s going on now with this rescue/recovery.
